Art Markman speaks about how to speak to people about science.
We need to learn strategies to communicate to the public successfully.
If we want to communicate to the public as a scientist we need to be experts in our scientific field.
Art Markman says that just because we know how to write academically correctly it doesn't mean you know what you are talking about, as an example he talked about a guy called Malcolm who was a reporter and he was a talented writer but he didn't know what he was talking about.
Once again he emphasized that in order to communicate something to the people for example science you have to be a successful scientist.
Art Markman talked about how he was trying to help on how to communicate science to the public. He started blogging, until now he has been blogging, and he is being blogging from some companies and other people.
Art Markman explained that in order to talk about people outside your field, we need to find a balance between things that makes us or makes our subject sound smart, and things or terms that helps them understand what you really want to get them to know and understand about your field.
Art Markman explains that in order to be scientist all your explanations and confirmations should always be based on data.
He explained that by just being a significant public figure like some sport person that became famous, people will agree with you even outside of the sport field. This happens because the things a sport person talks about is not bounded by data so there is nothing that can prove it wrong.
He also explained that Francis Crick who "discovered" the structure of DNA won the highest price as a scientist and he was wrong because what he said was not bounded by data, once the data was collected it proved him wrong.
Art Markman wants people to respect the way scientist propose theories, he wants to teach people how to know when a scientist is correct or why a scientist's theory should be correct and that is a the job of a science communicator.
We need to help people understand that when there is an issue, as long as it is data based, they need to address it as a scientist and try to find a possible way to explain it with data.
The more people think science matters, the more budgets will be funded for scientists to keep their research and investigations. This is another thing why we need to convince people that science is important.
